What do we do?

Long Term Care Advocates is the only “fee-based” extended care planning firm in the area. We can help you develop a strategic plan in advance of a need that will put you in control of where, when, who and how care will be provided.

Perhaps, you or someone you know may have recently experienced an issue with an aging parent such as a fall or a loss of memory which caused them to need help each day with ordinary activities such as walking, bathing, dressing, eating, using the toilet. The illness which contributed to the loss of these activities can, over time, so compromise the affected family member that thier spouse or another family member would have no choice but to provide care. The burden placed on family members to keep the affected relative safe can become overwhelming, especially for those giving care.

Family members, usually the spouse or the closest living daughter, are called upon to provide care. In some instances, these indivduals may lose time at work and suffer their own financial stress. If other family members live long distances away and are not able to provide care, hard feelings and disagreements regarding care can arise. This puts stress on the family emotionally. It is not uncommon for the family caregiver to become as chronically ill as those who require care. We have a saying that goes, “The best way to keep a family together is to keep them apart”. What this means is that when there is a plan for care in place, along with the financial means to pay for that care, family members can take on the role of care supervisors rather than caregivers. Then, professional caregivers can be utilized to provide day-to-day care services and allow family members to maintain their lifestyles and reduce the physical and emotional stress by simplyfing the logistics of hands-on caregiving.
